Frequently Asked Questions About Directory Submissions

How quickly will the directories add my link?

Some directories will add your link very quickly, within hours or a day or two. Others may take a week, or a month. Some may take longer.

When - or if - your link is accepted for a particular directory is a decision made by that directory's editor.

We can't guarantee that your link will be added by a particular directory, since that decision is out of our hands.

However, we do guarantee that we will submit your site in strict accordance with each directory's rules, thereby giving it the best chance of acceptance.

And, the average approval time is one factor we use when evaluating the directories which we choose to add to our submission list. We prefer to submit to sites with reasonably fast approval times.

How can I learn which directories have added my link?

Some directories will send us a confirmation email when they add your link to their directory.

When we send you our report detailing the directories to which we submitted your link, we'll note those which we know have already added your link.

Others will add your link without any notification. And more links to your site will be added over time.

There are several other methods you can use to determine who is linking to your site.

check Yahoo

You can query Yahoo to find how many links they've found to your site (backlinks).

To do this, type this into the search field at Yahoo.com:
link:www.example.com (see an example)

Be sure not to type any spaces in the query! Including spaces will give you an incorrect result.

Using www before your domain name may give you a slightly different result than omitting it. Try it both ways.

check Google Webmaster Tools

Google offers Webmaster Tools, a mind-blowingly useful set of resources for finding out what Google knows about your site.

The great thing about this is you can access a nearly-complete list of the links Google has found to your site.

To sign up for this free service, go to Google Webmaster Tools. It only takes a few minutes and you'll be very glad you did.

Please be aware that Google doesn't immediately update the report when they find new links. The backlink report is updated infrequently - every 2 or 3 months or so - so it may take some time for your new directory links to show up in that report. Yahoo updates their backlinks more often (see above). However, Google provides more information about the links than Yahoo does.

use a free online link checking tool

There are a number of websites offering free tools that find links to your site. Here's one that works fairly well: iWebtool's backlink checker.
