When you make a change to your domain’s nameservers through your domain’s registrar – for instance, changing to a new webhost – those changes take a while to take effect worldwide. The process is called DNS propagation.
Various servers worldwide will reflect your new DNS at various speeds – anywhere from almost immediately, to as much as 2 or 3 days.
The following tools check a variety of servers in different locations and show which IP address each server shows for your website.
Of course it’s not possible to query every server in the world – but if all the servers queried with these tools show your new IP, your DNS changes are likely to have propagated to most locations.
1. Site24x7 – Checks a handful of worldwide locations.
2. WhatsMyDNS – Queries 20 servers worldwide.
3. ViewDNS – Checks 19 servers worldwide.
4. Ceipam – Checks 18 servers worldwide, with options to check a custom IP, and your own local DNS server.
5. Cekdns.com – Checks DNS propagation from 53 servers worldwide.
6. Preshweb – Offers a number of options for checking DNS records. A little unreliable; some servers return no information.
7. Mob – Checks 19 servers, 15 of which are in the U.S.
8. Nexcess – Looks up your DNS in 22 global locations.
9. Cloud Monitor – Checks 50 locations throughout the globe.
10. DNSUnlimited – Checks 13 servers worldwide.
11. PropagatedYet – fill in your domain and new IP and it’ll give you a “yes” or “no” answer to the question, “Propagated Yet?”
12. CheckDNSpropagation – Checks a number of worldwide servers.
