How to "point" your domain to our servers

So! Quanta Webdesign is going to provide webhosting for your site (we do that for some of our clients).

How do you set your domain name (yourname.com) so it "points" to our web servers (the computers on which your site will reside)?

It's actually very easy to do. You'll want to visit your domain name registar's website, and log in, then follow a few steps to change your site's nameservers.

Our nameservers are called:
TEN.35ENOZ.3SN
TEN.35ENOZ.2SN

Why is this necessary? How does it work?

Your domain name is your address on the web. But, it's kind of a shortcut to the site's actual location, which is on a powerful computer permanently connected to the internet, called a server.

When you type in a domain name, you're routed to the server on which the website associated with that domain name resides.

Think of it this way: it's as if the domain name was the name of a person or business and the server address is a street address.

Imagine getting in a taxi, and asking to be taken to Trader Vic's. Though you may not know the actual street address, the cabbie can take you there because he knows the physical address where Trader Vic's is located, and how to get there.

The same thing happens when you ask to be taken to a domain name (maybe TraderVics.com!). You can get there because there is a physical address (the server address or "nameserver") associated with it, and the internet knows where that is, so can take you there when you ask it to.

When you set your domain name so it points to a particular server (the location where your site resides), that information is, over a 24-48 hour period, shared with every web server in the world. This connection of web servers is known as the internet. After all the servers know where your site lives, you can get to your site simply by using your domain name.

If you register a new domain name, change webhosts (or servers), you'll need to let the company that you registered your domain name from know, so they can get the word out to all the servers about your site's new address.

p.s. If you haven't yet registered your domain name, I'd recommend GoDaddy. I've found them to be easiest to use, plus they are extremely reliable & affordable. We're not affiliated with them, and don't gain anything by recommending them - they're just our favorite.
