Traffic. If you’re stuck in it, it’s not such a good thing.

But if we’re talking about web traffic — the visitors who come to your site — it is exactly what you want.

So, how do you get people to come to your site?

So, how do you drive traffic to your website NOW?

Links

Links still matter. They are still very important. But now you want to be sure that they are coming from diverse sources. If your links are mostly from directories, that’s a problem. They should be from many different types of websites.

– Ask anyone you know who has a webpage to link to yours (friends, family, other authors, publishers, newsletters, etc.).

– Ask websites related to yours to link to your site.

– If you publish your work online (in guest posts, online magazines, newspapers, photography or music sites, etc.) or your work is reviewed, ask those webpages to link back to your website. If you’re selling on Amazon, set up an Author Page there and mention your website.

– Directory links are still OK. But you need to be more careful these days; don’t use the same link text in all the links. Stick to quality web directories; niche directories (those that focus on a specialized topic) are especially good. Just don’t overdo the directory links. Google et al want to see links from many sources.

– The best way to get links is to have excellent content that people want to link to. These are the best kind of links – and always have been.

A well-built, well-designed website

Build your pages around focus keyword phrases. Use good SEO practices throughout your website. Update the site often to keep visitors (and search engine bots) coming back to see what’s new. Websites are never really finished; keep improving and adding to it. Stagnant websites don’t grow in popularity.

Keep the design clean and modern. Good design inspires confidence.

Social networking

This is now one of the primary ways that people learn about new websites and webpages, and how they share them with others. If you’re not participating in social networking, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to get the word out about your site.

If you haven’t yet delved into the social networking it can sound a little intimidating. But it’s really pretty simple. Though each social site works a little differently, they all have one thing in common: you can find people who share your interests, and connect with them. You can share your website content, and help them get the word out about theirs. They’ll do the same for you.

It doesn’t take long to get the hang of it, and can reap great rewards. There’s no need to have a presence on all the social sites; just start with one (I’d recommend Twitter, for simplicity, and impact) and go from there. Facebook and Pinterest are great, too.

Social networking usually works best when you do it yourself. But if you don’t want to do it yourself, you can hire someone to manage your social accounts for you.

Social sharing buttons

Install buttons on your website which will allow your visitors to click to share your content on the social sites, to email a link to others. You don’t even need your own social networking accounts to do this. AddThis.com has free sharing buttons you can install in just a minute or two.

Subscriptions, RSS & newsletters

Want visitors to repeatedly return to you site? Make it easy for your visitors to find out about new content. Set up a subscription option on your site, a RSS feed, or a newsletter — or, for best results, all three.

Signatures

You should take advantage of this very simple method. Put your web address & brief description in your email signature.

Do you have profiles on other websites? If it’s allowed, use the link in your signature there as well.

Advertising

There are opportunities to advertise on related sites for as little as a few cents a day. Even budgeting just a dollar or two a day can be very helpful in getting the word out.
